Commitment to Creation

If mankind as a whole, and the Church in particular, does not demonstrate care and concern for God’s creation, then who will?  The Bible tells us that Adam was placed in the Garden to ‘tend it and keep it’ (2:15). Cornerstone Fellowship therefore promotes the biblical injunction to care for God’s creation.  We affirm mankind’s responsibilities toward creation.  We believe that it is acceptable to cultivate the Earth’s resources in accord with our needs.  But, we must care for it and not exploit it.  We also oppose the exploitation of the Earth that prevails in our world purely for the sake of profit; for to do so is a form of idolatry.  Also, we believe that caring for God’s creation and not exploiting it for our own personal gain is a form of worship.  For the Lord says that’ all the earth is mine’ (Exod 19:5).  If then we ‘give to God what is God’s’ (Matt 22:21) and demonstrate care for that which is not ours’, we are in effect giving worship to God.

In light of our role as stewards of God’s creation here are some of things that Cornerstone does to help protect and care for the resources he has entrusted to us.

  • We recycle: Cardboard, Paper, Fluorescent Tubes, Computer CRTs, Batteries, Ink Cartridges, Bottles & Cans. This keeps the ol' landfill from fillin'.
  • Orby: We are participating in PG&E's Demand Response Program to reduce electricity use.
  • Sky lights eliminate the need to turn on lighting in our Courtyard in the day time.
  • Motion Sensors turn off lighting in rooms that are not in use. We also have A/B lighting so we can turn on only half lighting.
  • UV Film on all our exterior windows reflects heat. This reduces electricity use and the fossil fuels that are burned to produce it.
  • Photo cells and Timers turn off our parking lot and exterior lights and signs until dark.
  • Recycled Water irrigates all of our landscaping.
  • Bio-Swales on the perimeter of our parking lots clean the run-off water of dirt and oil and allows the water to seep back into the aquifer instead of running out to the Bay.
  • Trees in our parking lot have been planted more frequently than the City required. This provides natural cooling as well as photosynthesis to replenish oxygen.
